Korea Infomarket [Part 1]

Yo~ you guys =)
Me and one of my best friends are planning our trip to Korea so we went to an information market where there was a presentation about both North and South Korea. A very interesting day, especially the North Korean part =) And that's what I want to share with you.

Traveling to North
The journey starts in China because China is the only country that may access North Korea.

You'll first head your way to Dandong. It lies on the border between China and North Korea, which is marked by the Yalu River, it’s the largest border city in China. Dandong is a port city connected by rail with Shenyang and Sinuiju in North Korea.

(Where China ends ends the lights)

Next you'll follow this railroad and head your way to Pyongyang, but not before you hand in some belongings because:
• Mobile phone's
• Laptop/ Netbooks/ Notebooks
• Magazines
• Books about politics
• Camera's
Are NOT allowed in this country. So you have to hand them all in, though camera’s that aren’t scary looking (like small ones) are permitted.

North Korea knows many rules, they have an evening clock, you aren’t allowed to take pictures of militaries and you absolute can’t wander around the country on your own, you’ll always have two guides to follow you around. One to give you information about the country and one to correct the other one when he/she is making mistakes.

(Look how empty this city is)

Pyongyang
Pyongyang is the main capital of North Korea, it’s the richest city of the country and only the ‘good’ people can live there. ‘Good’ means people who never have wronged. They are loyal to Kim Il Sung and will always be loyal. Also the people who are rich are allowed to live there, the poor aren’t welcome.

Pyongyang has +/- 3 million residents, but no one is completely sure if that’s the correct information. Even though there are living 3 million people, you can’t tell when you’re walking around the city. The streets are completely empty except for the woman who take care of all the traffic … (what traffic?)

(A crowded day in Pyongyang)
Buildings
Pyongyang has three hotels. The Ryugyong Hotel is the most famous one. It’s a never finished project in the middle of the city. The building is also known as the 105 Building, a reference to its number of floors. Construction began in 1987 with planned completion in 1989. However, after several delays, construction was eventually halted in 1992. They started building again last year and they’ve finished the project from the outside.

Pyongyang also has the Koryo Hotel this is the second largest operating hotel in North Korea.

And then you also have the Yanggakdo International Hotel. This is one of the largest working hotels and the second tallest building in North Korea. This hotel is located on a small island in the middle of Taedong River. You can walk around the island any time you want, even without your guides, but you absolutely may NOT leave this small island on your own, it´s strictly guarded.
There is something strange about this hotel, because the elevator skips the 5th floor, you can only reach this floor by stairs. No one really knows what´s on the 5th floor. But there are people saying they saw military people sitting there with headphones on staring at TV screens. While other people say they saw people tied to a wall, crying. (But no one knows if it’s really true).

The most famous building in Pyongyang would be the Kumsusan Memorial Palace a.k.a Kim Il-sung Mausoleum. The palace is the former official residence and office of North Korea's president and founder, Kim Il-sung. Following Kim Il-sung's death in 1994, his son Kim Jong-il had the building renovated and transformed into his father's final resting place. Inside the palace, Kim Il-sung's embalmed body lies viewable inside a clear glass sarcophagus. His head rests on a Korean-style pillow and he is covered by the flag of the Workers Party of Korea. The whole palace is covered with gold and marble walls from the inside.
The palace is situated in a secluded area in Pyongyang and is only accessible to foreigners on Thursdays and Sundays on official government tours. Photography, videotaping, smoking and talking are not permitted anywhere inside the palace. (If we join this tour we can visit this Mausoleum too, kinda scary...)

Pyongyang has his own 2 line metro line. The Metro station is famous because Pyongyang Metro is the deepest metro in the world the track is approximately 120 meters deep underground. In times of war, the metro stations can serve as bomb shelters. For this purpose, the stations are fitted with large steel doors. Some sources claim that large military installations are connected to the stations and they claim that there are secret lines for government use.

The Rŭngrado May First Stadium, or May Day Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium. The stadium was constructed as a main stadium for the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students in 1989. But it’s currently used for sport events and the all famous Arirang performances a.k.a the Mass Games. The Stadium has a capacity of 150.000 seats! Which Is the largest stadium capacity in the world and the 12th world largest sporting venue.

The Mangyongdae Children's Palace (or Mangyongdae School Children's Palace) in Pyongyang is a public facility in North Korea where children can learn more besides there school, such as learning music, foreign languages, computing skills and doing sports.

Monuments and their meanings
Pyongyang has many monumental elements. Everything with it’s own meaning.

Workers Party of Korea Monument: It stands for the things Pyongyang believes in the most, “succes”, the hammer and sickle represent the triumph of the workers and peasants while the brush symbolizes the success of students.
Juche Tower: a reminder to the North Korean people of the philosophy of Juche (self-reliance)
Arch of Reunification: It was constructed in 2001 to commemorate the Korean reunification proposals put forward by Kim Il-sung. The Arch of Reunification has a map of Korea being unified. It is supported by two concrete Korean women symbolizing North and South.
Arch of Triumph: The Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang was built to commemorate the Korean resistance to Japan from 1925 to 1945. This is the world's biggest Arch of Triumph's ever made.
Propaganda: Everywhere around North Korea you’ll find propaganda. It’s remarkable that propaganda only consists photographs and statues of Kim Il Sung, who died in 1994. Though his son Kim Jong-il is the leader now, you won’t find any propaganda of him. It’s very clear that North Korea still love Kim Il Sung and that they will warship him forever, like some kind of god.

Events
Many people think that North Korea is a country where people aren’t permitted to have fun. But that’s not true, at least not in Pyongyang. There are many events during the year. People from all over North Korea can travel to Pyongyang when they have permission to do so. But unfortunately, Pyongyang has some strict rules, people who have wronged the country, don’t have much money, ect ect. Aren’t allowed to enter the city.

The Pyongyang International Film Festival is a remarkable event. North Korea is well known for it’s restrained contact with other countries (especially western countries) but during this Festival they show movies from all over the world. English comedies, American thrillers and so on. This event will be held two times a year.

The Grand Mass Gymnastics and Artistic Performance Arirang (Arirang Festival) This is a two Month festival held in the Rungrado May Day Stadium. It’s hard to explain this festival in words. You can participate this event from as young as 5 years old, citizens are selected based on skill level to serve for the Arirang Festival for many years. In most cases this will be the way of life for them until retirement.
The opening event of the two month festival are the mass games, which are famed for the huge mosaic pictures created by more than 30,000 well trained and disciplined school children, each holding up coloured cards, accompanied by complex and highly choreographed group routines performed by tens of thousands of gymnasts and dancers. In August 2007, the Arirang Mass Games were recognised by Guinness World Records as the biggest event of its kind. In recent years, foreign tourists have been allowed to watch one of the many performances.

[2010.11.19] CIRQUE DU SOLEIL

Yo~!
I went to Cirque du Soleil yesterday~! This time to the show Totem =) It's their new show and it was absolutely amazing ♥

I went with my mom and grandmother =) I wanted her to come with us because I knew she would love every second of it! ^^ We traveled to Amsterdam by train which went well ... too well >.< Anyways we arrived at the tent and we could go directly to our seats. We were sitting on the 8th row on the left side of the stage =) A good view !!

I was so excited! I couldn't wait one more minute! I wanted to see Totem! And not very much later the lights went off and the show started. =) The music immediately gave me choosebumps, and a smile from ear to ear was shown on my face XD I was so happy! It started with light projects on the stage which showed us underwater effects =) And some water creatures did some acrobatic acts. I can't explain what they did tho =x XD Kinda hard to explain! But after the underwater acts the projects on the stage showed us the sea hitting the beach. With sea sounds <33 Then there was one of my favorite acts 2 boys and one girl who were flying in the air doing some awesome stunts!

My favorite act was the denying love trapeze act. One boy tries to impress a girl and she sort of falls for it and then a denying love trapeze act starts =x She tries to get away from him by letting go of his hands or the trapeze but he can't let her go. (she litterly let go of the trapeze and hands =x she just let herself fall down and he catched her by one hand or leg! It was absolutely amazing ♥) and after trying to leave him the whole act long, they both fall in love in the end ^^. At least that's how I saw the act, that's the great thing about Cirque du Soleil everyone can see it differently. It's a bummer that there aren't any video's of it yet! So I can't show it to you =) But I will post the trailer for a impression of how it was!

Jep the Show was awesome but No ... it didn't win from Varekai!! Varekai is still my favorite Cirque du Soleil Show by FAR ♥

[2010.11.05] TEXEL

Yo~!
I know this blog is a bit late and all but I still want to tell about my weekend at Texel =)

Texel is a small island in the Netherlands (See picture) it's one of the 5 islands that you can visit =) We have two more but you're not allowed to go there because of it's nature.

I went to Texel together with my mom, dad, bro, his girlfriend and one of my best friends. Also our dog went with us!

Day 1: The Arrival
We traveled to Den Helder by car. Mom dad my bro and his girlfriend in one car me and my best friend in the other! It was awesome xD I never traveled for such a long time with non stop Kpop music in the CD player! We sang along talked a lot and once we were in Den Helder the CD was at it's end and we started all over again! xD (Den Helder is 3 hours drive by car but we had some traffic jam so it took us almost 4 hours to get there!!)

Oke there we were waiting for the ferry to arrive. Because it wasn't summer and all the ferry only departed once per hour! And guess what? We just missed the last one so we had to wait for a whole hour! Such a bummer! We had to go to the toilet sooo badly and there was no toilet to be seen so we were kind of panicing since we really needed to go!! In the and we found a dude who told us the toilet was at the end of the line cars. So Laura (my best friend) and I decided to look for them ... lucky us we found them quickly because it was almost time for the ferry to arrive!

We walked back to the cars and oh hell xD There it was, the ferry! So we kind of ran towards the car and when we arrived we could ride up the bridge into the ferry. (so we really were just in time!) The ferry ride? is always fun when you have food. I had some bread that I didn't eat along the way so I threw it in the air and in no time there were like 40 seagulls who tried to pick up the food out of my hands! Kind of scary really, one isn't that bad but 40 is quite intimidating. But it was kinda fun xD people looked at me like "she's crazy!" But I didn't care!

There it was Texel, the rain was all gone and the sun was shining! Like we were in a complete different country!! ^^ Then we had some epic scene going on because it was a traffic jam at Texel like WTF xD how can that happen on an island were live more sheep then people!

Anyways enough about the journey, it was all dark when we finally arrived at our cottage =) It wasn't that bad tho we went to the supermarked bought some stuff, walked around "De Koog" a bit (thats the name of the town) and went to the beach in the dark XD I can't see much in the dark because I'm night-blind so that was something to laugh about for the others. They were all like "HO Anke watch out a ... " but then it was to late because I already found that rock and I was on the floor! (_ _ " ) It's a good thing sand is soft!

Day 2: Birds, Dunes and ... sludge!!
The next day we looked out of the window and saw sun, lots of sunlight! It was a beautiful day! =) So we decided to visit some nature area's so we went to the most amazing area of them all the "Slufter" valley.

It was funny because I had my old shoes on so I could walk through the valley without thinking about my good shoes and so I did! But what I sort of forgotten was that sludge is kinda slippy!! XD We walked around for 2,5 hours! We saw lots of birds (Wadlopers) and it was so peacefull and quiet 'till I screamed because I fell into the sludge but the birds didn't seem to care so I guess they're used to it?! After walking for 2 hours we decided to walk back which wasn't that easy but we made it~!! Not with dry feet ofcourse but it was good weather that day so I put out my shoes and walked around barefoot!

The stairs we needed to climb before we were at the other side of the dunes! As you can see there was sunlight~! And some birds sitting in a pool! ^^ Talking about whatever birds talk about! XD And some dunes, sand, water from the sea and sludge!! Look at that sky xD I heard from my friends that it was horrible weather in Holland that day and we had sunlight the whole day long! ^^

After the Slufter we went to a little beach point where it was all quiet so that Flint (our dog) could run around without we had to worry about other people! ^^ There were only some fishing man on the beach and seagulls and some tiny cute birds that ran around like crazy! XD It looked funny because it are birds... why do they RUN when they can FLY XD.

After that, Laura and I went back to the cottage to change clothes so that we could visit one of the bigger towns on Texel while the others were going to the lighthouse =).

When we arrived in Den Burg I bought some useless things XD like you can see on the pictures below ^^ (keyrings; one rabbit (SO CUTE) and one sheep since Texel has more sheep then people)
After eating some of the best fried fish I ever had we went back to the cottage! Seriously I could eat there for hours if it wasn't that expensive and the dudes who worked at that place were all really cute and I suspected them to be gay o.O one of them was standing against the other and was stroking the other guys cheek with his hand. Gay action @ Texel hell yesh! XD It was a bummer none of them was Asian tho! =(

That evening we watched some typical Dutch TV shows (Ik hou van holland) and Inception =)

Day 3: Lighthouse Seals and Ecomare
We drove (with our Kpop music) to the lighthouse. The sun was nowhere to be seen but it wasn't raining so that was a good thing! ^^ We walked on the beach for an hour or so =) We walked towards the line where the " Noordzee " and " Waddenzee " were coming together and there it was! In the beginning I didn't know what I saw in the water I thought it was a bird or something but a little bit later a little head popped up from the water and it was really a wild seal! I never saw a wild seal before! But it was so cute! ^^ He followed us all the way back !!

That afternoon we went to Ecomare, a ittle museum about the "Waddeneilanden" but it's also a centre to take care of wounded and sick animals who are found on Texel =) They also had some seals there! So cute and also so sad that they were all there since they are all sick =( And the biggest enemie is the human. Why can't we just leave the nature alone and stop dropping garbage in the seas! When we were in the Slufter we also found plastic bags, bottle's of beer and energy drink and also a silicone gun ... so sad!

That evening we planned a bowling evening first we went out to eat some pizza and normally I'm not a big pizza fan but this one was absolutly amazing! Wish we had a Pizzaria like that at our place! And after that it was time to embarrass myself because it was bowling time. The first round went actually great XD we had fun because I was doing so good and my dad sucked =x So we felt good by defeating him. Laura had some troubles to control her way of throwing the bowlingbal it always made a turn to the left side o.O Very strange! But in the second round she totally defeated me! Bummer! ^^ But at the very end my dad still won! .___.

That evening we called it a day early because we had to leave around 9 oclock in the morning the next day!

Day 4: Goodbye peace
It was time to leave Texel behind and to go back home. I didn't want to leave I could've stayed there so much longer =( We started our Kpop CD again and we went home this time without much troubles. We arrived at the ferry in time and we didn't had any traffic jams along the way! ^^ We lost my dad along the way, I still dunno how o.O but we found them back!

Jep it was a great weekend and I talked too much about it and probably no one is going to read this xD but it doesn't matter because this is a little reminder for myself =)
